All Phillies fans are waiting for Cole Hamels to turn that corner and start dominating like last year but instead he faulters again giving up 7 er and 9 hits in just 4 innings after getting through the first 2 innings without giving up a hit. His velocity seems normal sitting in the low 90's or upper 80's and his control is been very good this year, but something is different with him. Currently hitters are batting a robust .312 off him and he has had a tendency to leave balls up in the zone this year and then when he makes a good pitch he gets many bloops and grounders hit off him that have eyes and find holes. Another concern for me is the he isn't getting as many swings and misses as normal and hitters are able to foul off tough pitches and wait for something they can handle. I just hope those 262 innings he threw last year aren't catching up with him. On a side note, I still wonder how a guy like Jack Taschner has a job right now, everytime he goes out there it makes me cringe and its just hard to watch.
The Phillies have also named journeyman Rodrigo Lopez to start on Friday just adding to the wealth of great starting pitching the Phillies have right now. I was hoping to see a glimpse of the future on Friday with Carlos Carrasco even though it has been a struggle for him, he has pitched well as of late and dont think he could do any worse than Lopez. Lopez numbers at AAA Lehigh Valley have been decent posting a 3.91 era in 13 starts, although hitters are hitting .292 off him this year. I myself am a little worried at what that might translate to in the majors.

nice to see a blog started for mr. philly... it's unfortunate that it took a beatdown to make you start this, hopefully that won't be an omen.
ReplyDeletei do think that those innings had an effect on hamels, or he just isnt healthy. watchin him dominate the playoffs last year, to being average at best this year is painful. i hope for your health and well being he turns it around.
and hears to hoping the phils can figure it out at home and get out of this slump they are in. the division is helpin you out a lot by not performing at the level it did last year. but the mets get healthy in the next month or so, so the phils (and rollins!) better wake up
yea i know what a way to start out a blog after the phils fall hard, I have bee frustrated as hell with them lately and had to vent some frustration
